N2 - With their new thematic volume – presented here in summarised form – the Interdisciplinary Research Group "Gene Technology Report" of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities turns its attention to synthetic biology, a topic that remains largely ignored by the general public. Particularly fascinating here are the ongoing disagreements as to exact nature of synthetic biology, in addition to which research methods should be concretely recognised in this field. Does this indeed reflect the emergence of a new kind of biological engineering? After introducing the factual (chapter 1) and methodological (chapter 2) frameworks, the issue is discussed in a critical fashion from a scientific-historical perspective in connection with synthetic-technical traditions in biology (chapter 3). After that, the current state of scientific knowledge is elucidated with a focus on chemical-synthetic research methodologies (chapter 4), as well as new applications in biomedical science (chapter 5). Using an interdisciplinary approach, the Interdisciplinary Research Group also discusses new philosophical (chapter 6) and ethical (chapter 7 and 8) implications that arise in association with synthetic biology. Lastly, the topic of the public’s perception of this discipline is addressed, both in related contemporary media reports (chapter 9), as well as in a survey of German and European public opinion (chapter 10). As is customary, these substantive remarks are supported by quantitative data in the form of indicators (chapter 11). The individual contributions are complemented by joint key statements and recommendations for action by the members of the Interdisciplinary Research Group "Gene Technology Report".
