TY - CHAP A1 - Wiedemann, Conrad A1 - Charlier, Robert T1 - 'Fremdling im eigenen Land' : zur Genealogie eines Intellektuellen-Attributs T1 - A Foreigner in one's own land : the origin of an intellectual status N2 - This essay examines the notion of the intellectual as a foreigner in hisher own land and its central importance for the self-understanding of intellectuals in the late 18th century. By attempting to narrate the history of motivs and characteristic topoi of speech, the authors identify an intemal foreigness or feeling of not belonging which manifests itself as an exclusion of the self and the foreign in the modes of polemics. Intellectuals stylize or masquerade themselves as foreigners to call into question the dismantling of their social circumstances and the indignity of their own position.
